Kinetic theory of gases (overview)

The kinetic theory of gases describes the macroscopic properties of gases by analysing gaseous behavior at the molecular level.

The theory assumes that a gas is composed of point masses that are moving randomly, in straight lines and with different velocities in a container. As they move, they may collide elastically with each other or with the walls of the container. The first important concept of the kinetic theory of gases is the root mean square speed of a gas.
